Raymond Family Art Night

The community really came together to make the first ever Raymond Family Art Night a reality! With the help of All the Arts for All the Kids, Raymond School PTA, and other volunteers from around the community, Art Night on Thursday, January 28th was a huge success! The community volunteers included Lauralyn Eschner and team (All the Arts for All the Kids), Henry Lee (Epic Church), Hector Sanchez (Lather.one Barbershop), Leah Lopez and Angela Joo (Raymond School), Christie Noh and Jesse LaTour (Hibbleton Gallery), Noel and Melissa Runcie (Madabella & Co.) and Kristy and myself (PÄS | project art school).

Art Stations available during the night included Clay, Watercolor Pencil, Watercolor Paint, Origami, Oil Pastels, Journal Making, Haiku, Altered Art and Pencil Sketching. The families who attended had the pleasure of trying out different mediums and enjoying time together in a creative way.

Select artworks will be on display at the PÄS Gallery in Downtown Fullerton from February 8th through 26th. An opening reception for the artists will be held Saturday, February 13th from 3-5pm.

be sure to come out to PÄS Gallery to see the KIDS EXHIBIT!

one word show

> CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE ARTIST STATEMENT <

the reception for my first solo exhibit was a couple weeks ago in the TSU’s Center Gallery at cal state fullerton. the intimate show is by no means a pretty one, but it’s my hope to provoke thought and interact with the viewer. the show is titled, “one word is worth at least a thousand images” and it’s a small representation of my writing as well as the Cut-Up allowing a multitude of interpretations to come from them. no one owns words, so we use them freely, rearranging them to form our own ideals. when you think “pink” and i think “pink” there are most likely different images associated at that moment. the main idea for the show is that the viewer can create their own image, making it the largest exhibit of images in history per square foot. :)

there was a good show of friends and family and i’m confident that it got everyone thinking. for better. for whatever. but thinking, nonetheless. here are some pics from january 22 along with a little explanation for those who i couldn’t talk with personally:

perhaps this was the most interesting part of the show. the dreamachine – an art piece designed to view with your eyes closed. in my research of the cut-up literary style and it’s process, i stumbled upon this invention from one of my largest influences, brion gysin. i made my own stroboscopic light to demonstrate what he was innovating in the 60’s. my contraption is made of a world map. the idea that the visions induced by the machine are international with no ethnic borders. it also symbolizes a world like no other as i’ve cut through existing masses of land and water (countries and oceans, etc…) making completely unique places like, “nited state” and “hern ocean.”

we put these “inspiration” words on the table with a sharpie and encouraged everyone to write their own. i had no idea that they would actually write over and modify the existing words. to me, it couldn’t get more perfect than that. this was a testament that the show got people thinking. here are a couple of my faves:

the “X” boxes on the glass are blank image boxes. they’re on the glass over the words, so as the viewer reads the words they insert their own image. symbolically  of course. it was a way to creatively use the space, put words in a gallery setting, and break the world record for most images in a gallery – all at the same time. :)

there are 1,746 words in the exhibit (yes, i counted) and if one word is worth at least a thoudand images, you can only imagine the image possibilities. far more possibilities than people who will see this exhibit. and technically it’s a thought that can be permutated forever. above is a poster with one word (woman) with nearly a thousand representations of the word. imagine all the women in the world are defined by one graphic as well. also above (to the right) is my artist statement for this show broken up pointing out the anatomy of it’s layout. this represents the similar layout between a poem and a design layout. afterall, graphic design is the poetry of communication and poetry is the graphic design of literature.

above is a display of a traditional cut-up poem i wrote from an a piece of prose i wrote. poetry is very much design with the control of line breaks and placement of language. we use it everyday. i use it every time i write. above (to the right) is my first dreamachine, but the poor old record player’s motor burnt out, so now it sits stationary.

a little on the cut-up and why i’m so fascinated with it. and an ode to Antony Hitchin whom encouraged and influenced the world of brion gysin.

“ultralight” and “matchbook”

we are natural waste polluting the earth. we come from where we are, meet at the green recycling ideals, then head out and do our best to keep our planet safe and evangelize the “go green” concept, promoting better ways to use materials. i’ve come to terms that human life is inevitably wasteful and the best way to go green is to draw it’s complimentary color, red, and eliminate me which in turn uses no materials. emo, right?

101 types of poetry in a “this is a test” graphic.

how did my eyes get blue?

“material” and “author of salvation”

marinara sauce and ash.

“life” and the things we revolve it around.

“elements” using nature for self-reflection.

“epiphanies” a series of short poems.

this is the guestbook, a book already illustrated and written, encouraging the visitors to write over the words that exist in the book. and again, i sense the opening of minds, as everyone’s comments were continuations of the exiting type, making it that much more interesting. thanks to all who came out. and to those who didn’t, thanks for making it this far in this super long blog.

if you visit the show in person (up til february 19th), give yourself a clear head and some time to sit an read for a few. it’s not one of those cruise-through pretty-picture exhibits.

also, very soon i will post the poems that were used in the show at brianprince.com/blog because i know it’s not possible to read them here.

color prophecy…

before i chose the color to brand PÄS, i have to confess, i didn’t do any research and only went with personal preference and gut feeling. as a designer i suppose i should have checked out the personality traits for turquoise. but i didn’t. and what do you know, Pantone® names Turquoise the color of 2010! i chose pms 7473 and their pick was 15-5519. pretty darn close. my reasons were pretty shallow compared to the depth they went into. i liked it because it’s fresh, calming and unisex.

here’s what they had to say:

Pantone is pleased to announce PANTONE 15-5519 Turquoise, an inviting, luminous hue, as the Color of the Year for 2010. Combining the serene qualities of blue and the invigorating aspects of green, Turquoise inspires thoughts of soothing, tropical waters and a comforting escape from the everyday troubles of the world, while at the same time restoring our sense of wellbeing.

In many cultures, Turquoise is believed to be a protective talisman, a color of deep compassion and healing, and a color of faith and truth, inspired by water and sky. Through years of color word-association studies, we also find that to many people, Turquoise represents an escape, taking them to a tropical paradise that is pleasant and inviting – even if it is only a fantasy.

Whether envisioned as a tranquil ocean surrounding a tropical island or a protective stone warding off evil spirits, Turquoise is a color that most people respond to positively. It is universally flattering, has appeal for men and women, and translates easily to fashion and interiors. With both warm and cool undertones, Turquoise pairs nicely with any other color in the spectrum. Turquoise adds a splash of excitement to neutrals and browns, complements reds and pinks, creates a classic maritime look with deep blues, livens up all other greens, and is especially trend-setting with yellow-greens.

what a spectacular explanation for this well-rounded color. no wonder i love it. and for the record, i chose the PÄS turquoise in 2009 :)

you are going to die…

we were aimlessly wondering around brooklyn and stumbled upon a strip of galleries. it was after hours but we really enjoyed ‘window shopping.’ here’s a pic of something that grabbed my eye. i think it was in Offset Projects’ space or JunkShop’s space, somewhere…

i want to meet phil birch, the creator of this shirt. first of all, i’ve been using New Courier Bold a lot lately (in almost every piece of my show). i might have left justified it (but that’s just me). and besides that, this is such a great message because it’s so true. it’s the one absolute thing we all have in common. and he chose to throw it on a t-shirt and put it in your face to just make you feel a smidge more uncomfortable than we (the average person) already do (walking) in our own skin.

on another note, here are some signs that stood out while walking around the city…

i’m diggin the ‘No Parking/Street Sweeping’ logo with the added “Don’t Litter” and i’ve become very fond of the NYC logo. hope you enjoyed a little randomness. photo credits: kristy and brian prince.

what type are you…

this is fun… kristy caught me doing it and she had to try, that’s why i think it’s blog-worthy. you answer 4 simple questions and Pentagram generates a typeface to fit your personality. i think i just like the guy’s accent and hand gestures. and when he says, “quickly now” if you’re taking to long to answer.

according to Pentagram, this ‘project’ was researched over seven years with a team of 23 academics across Eastern Europe, it asks the four key character questions of our day, analyzes your responses in exceptional detail and recommends one of 16 typefaces as a result.

i’m PLASTICA (1932). pretty fitting, i’d say. i would like to refer to myself as a slab serif of sorts, but i’m happy with plastica, which was designed by german typesetter and calligrapher Herbert Post. it was inspired by injection molding. defined by the embossed relief of it’s letters and the extremely negative form which extrudes feeling and ambition in a very assertive way.

kristy was Corbusier Stencil. upper case and numbers only. used by Le Corbusier to spray names onto buildings. balance. geometrical organization. spray paint obliteration. imposing over something or someone with good reason and impeccable judgment. spot on.

give it a try:

Journal Making with Katherine England

The best part about opening PÄS is all the wonderful and talented people we get to meet. This christmas Brian got me an all-day journal making class with Katherine England. She is a well-known artist here in Fullerton. The day event lasted from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at her fun studio here in Fullerton. She was such and inspiration to me as she led my heart to fly with freedom.

Here is her studio in her backyard. I couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day.

IMG_2965

After we folded 8 signatures of watercolor paper, we learned the coptic stitch. I also added some random piece of decorative paper that I love.

We made the covers from 5″ x 7″ pieces of wood and used PVC glue to adhere reprinted OZ book covers.

This is the finished journal complete with cover and leather binding. I already started to write in it. I’m looking forward to a great year of getting to know more of our community in 2010!
